Description

The feathers of a bird are highly complex structures. The main shaft of the feather (not shown on the picture) attaches to the body of the animal. The shaft branches up into many parallel barbs. These barbs then divide again into barbules. The barbules have small hooks, which interlock, making the feather air-tight.
