In humans and other mammals, the skin is the largest organ of the body. It has a surface of appr. 2 square meters (appr. 20 square feet) and has multiple layers. The surface layer of the skin consists of dead cells, the lower layers of reproducing cells, sweat glands, blood vessels, nerves and connecting tissue. The skin has a lot of functions like protection from bacteria, toxic substances, heat or cold. Also, it helps regulating the body temperature, it produces vitamin D and can store nutrients. This is a biopsy of a human skin, which also contains freckle, which are clusters of melanin (the skin's pigment).
